By Ray Hamill — It was a busy night for the H-DNL football teams on Friday, with five varsity teams in action.

The only all-local varsity matchup of the weekend took place at McKinleyville High School, where the St. Bernard’s Crusaders dominated their hosts and cruised to a comfortable victory.

The Crusaders led 23-0 before the end of the opening quarter and improved to 2-0 with a 37-0 victory.

The Panthers, who were coming off a big win over Fort Bragg last week, dropped to 1-1.

St. Bernard’s also took the JV game by a score of 17-0 to go to 2-0.

The Panthers JVs dropped to 1-1.

Del Norte, Hoopa and Ferndale each also were in action on Friday night.

The Del Norte Warriors found themselves in a battle early on with the Grizzlies in Ashland, but pulled away late for a comfortable win.

The visitors scored 28 unanswered points down the stretch to win 42-13, as they also improved to 2-0.

The Hoopa Warriors also were victorious, winning 20-6 at Etna and improving to 1-1.

The Hoopa JVs ensured it would be a good all-around night for the Warriors, also winning their matchup at Etna by a score of 16-6 and improving to 1-1.

The Ferndale Wildcats, meanwhile, kicked off their season at Fort Bragg and dominated the Timberwolves.

The Cats, who were No. 1 in this week’s Humboldt Sports Power rankings, lived up to that ranking with a 57-0 win over the Timberwolves, who dropped to 0-2.

We’ll have a full report on the Ferndale game on Saturday.

Rounding out a busy weekend for the local teams, the Eureka Logger JVs and varsity teams will be in action on Saturday night when they host Shasta at the Redwood Bowl.

The JVs get the night started at 5, followed by the varsity teams at 7:30 p.m.
