The H-DNL girls golf season officially got under way this week, with the annual league best ball tourney.
The league’s golfers traveled to Beau Pre Golf Course for the season-opening event on Wednesday, and if early indications are anything to go by it could be a good season for the Del Norte Warriors.
The winning twosome was Bria Larson and Jaylee Keeling from Del Norte, while the Warriors also took the team win with a score of 194, which was 11 strokes better than the field.
Longtime Arcata head coach Troy Ghisetti believes Larson will be one of the top individuals in league play this fall.
“I think Bria from Del Norte has really kind of set the standard just watching her play,” Ghisetti said.
Last year Larson placed fourth in league, which was won by Arcata’s Madyson Nelson.
McKinleyville’s Ingrid Monaghan also looks likely to contend for this year’s league title after transferring from St. Bernard’s.
Monaghan, who was unable to compete this week due to transfer protocols, placed third in league a year ago.
And her addition will give the Panthers some depth this fall.
Her new teammates, Abby Allen and Jaxin Bartoo, placed second at this week’s best ball tourney.
The defending league champion Arcata Tigers took second in Wednesday’s team event with a 205, which was two strokes better than the Eureka Loggers in third.
The Tigers, who have dominated the league team championships in recent years, also should have some much-needed depth.
“We have some girls that are going to be pretty good,” Ghisetti said.
Julia Omaha is back to lead the charge for the Arcata girls after a strong showing last year, along with first-year players Sabrina MacDonald and Shayla Hoffman.
League competition gets under way at Benbow on Thursday.
