New Cal Poly Humboldt men’s basketball head coach DJ Broome has named his new assistant coach, the Jacks announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Broome, who was named new head coach of the team last month, has added John Seavey to his staff.

Seavey joins the Lumberjacks after serving as the lead assistant at Cal State Monterey Bay for the past three seasons (2022-25).

“I am super excited to have John on board,” Broome said. “His hunger and experience both at the college level and in the CCAA specifically made it an easy decision on my end.

“We are lucky to have him and look forward to the role he will play in helping build this program.”

During his time with the Otters, Seavey was instrumental in recruiting, player development, and opponent scouting, helping CSUMB make significant strides in the competitive CCAA.

And he says he is looking forward to the new challenge.

“I am thrilled to join the Cal Poly Humboldt men’s basketball program under coach Broome’s leadership,” Seavey said. “I look forward to playing a role in the growth and success of our student-athletes, both on and off the court. Go Jacks.”

Before joining Cal State Monterey Bay, Seavey spent five seasons as an assistant coach at UC Santa Barbara.

During his time with the Gauchos, the team enjoyed multiple 20-win seasons and postseason appearances, establishing itself as a Big West Conference powerhouse.

Seavey’s coaching journey began at the University of Arizona, where he served under head coach Sean Miller.

As part of the Wildcats’ staff, he contributed to player development and opponent scouting.

During his time at Arizona, Seavey was part of five NCAA Tournament teams, three Pac-12 championships and two Elite Eight runs.

A two-time graduate of the University of Arizona, Seavey earned his bachelor’s degree in Sports and Society in 2016 and a master’s in Educational Leadership in 2017.

Broome replaced Chris Tifft, who left the Jacks to become head coach of conference rival Cal State San Bernardino.
