If last weekend was any indication, Cirrus Villarruel appears to have a bright future on the local wrestling mats.

The young eight-year-old traveled to compete at the prestigious Rocky Mountain Nationals in Las Vegas and turned in a performance he won’t easily forget at an event that attracts some of the top young grapplers from all across the nation.

Villarruel, who was competing with the McKinleyville youth team, took home a gold medal in the 8U 70-pound folkstyle division after going 3-0 in the tournament.

He defeated Rudy Mcallister 8-3 in the final.

But that’s not all.

Villarruel also placed first in the 8U 74-pound bracket, winning all three of his matches in that division.

He defeated Knight Rapoza in the final with a dominating 15-2 decision.

Villarruel, who also competes with Cass Bell’s Institute of Combat team, was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler in the 8U division.

He is coached by his older brother Talon Villarruel, who was this year’s 126-pound H-DNL champion.
