By Ray Hamill — It was such a good year for Del Norte High sports, it was impossible to single out any one student as a boys senior athlete of the year.
On Wednesday night, at the Warriors’ annual scholarship banquet, three student athletes were named senior athletes of the year.
The outstanding Tsinte Steinruck was named the female athlete of the year, while Colton Schaad and Aidan Rice were named the co-male athletes of the year.
All three were deserved winners.
Steinruck, who will play softball at College of the Redwoods next year, was a three-sport standout for the Warriors.
She was an all-league selection in volleyball, basketball and softball and also established herself as a key team leader in all three sports.
Even more impressive, the senior standout was also the Warriors’ lone representative on the inaugural H-DNL All-Sportsmanship team this spring.
Schaad and Rice were equally impressive.
Rice was an all-league selection in both football and baseball and also received an all-league honorable mention in basketball.
He will play baseball at Shasta College next year.
Schaad, meanwhile, was one of the most impressive wrestlers to come through the H-DNL in recent years and was a two-time state qualifier on the mats.
He also was arguably the best all-around football player in the Big 4 in his senior season and was named co-Defensive MVP of the conference.
Schaad will wrestle at the University of Jamestown in North Dakota after graduation.
The athlete of the year awards were announced at the school’s annual scholarship night, where $400K of scholarships were awarded to Del Norte seniors.
