By Ray Hamill — Cal Poly Humboldt men’s basketball head coach Chris Tifft is leaving the Lumberjacks to take over a rival program.

Tifft has been hired as the new head coach of Cal State San Bernardino after just two seasons with the Jacks.

He replaces Gus Argenal, who has left San Bernardino to take over as head coach at Division-I UC Riverside.

Tifft is coming off a big season with the Jacks after leading them to their first playoff win since 2016.

It was the program’s first winning season since 2018-19, and a first conference campaign above .500 since 2016.

The Jacks also received votes in the West Regional Top-10 poll twice for the first time since 2021.

The team finished fourth in the CCAA and opened the postseason tournament with a 70-52 win over Cal Poly Pomona.

The Jacks finished the season 18-11 overall and 13-9 in conference.

Tifft also has coached at Cal State Northridge, Central Michigan, Saint Louis, TCU, and his alma mater Nevada.

  1. Ryan Bizio would be a perfect fit. He has a strong local following, that would bring local fans to the games
