By Ray Hamill — The field has been set for next week’s Charles Lakin softball tournament after Thursday’s Little 4 action, but it took a coin flip to finalize things.
On the final day of conference play, a surging Hoopa team traveled to Samoa to play a doubleheader against St. Bernard’s, and Ferndale hosted South Fork in another doubleheader.
The Warriors won both of their games — 4-0 and 6-2 — while the Wildcats and Cubs split.
Ferndale won an exciting opener by a score of 8-7 in eight innings, with Caleigh Griffith driving in teammate Rainy Rodriguez for the walk-off victory.
The conference champion Cubs, who had clinched the title outright a week ago, bounced back to take game two 17-4 in six innings.
The Cubs finished 9-3 and could not be caught going into the final day of the regular season, while the Hoopa girls, who have won six of their last eight Little 4 games, closed out conference play with a record of 7-5.
The Wildcats and Crusaders each tied for third in conference with identical records of 4-8.
However the league held a tie-breaking coin flip on Thursday night to determine which of them would receive the conference’s third seed and final berth for next week’s Lakin tournament, with the Crusaders winning.
They will open the Lakin tournament against Fortuna at the Arcata Sports Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
As conference champs, the Cubs have received a first-round tournament bye and will play a semifinal against either Fortuna or St. Bernard’s in Thursday’s semifinals.
The Hoopa girls will open tournament play on Tuesday against McKinleyville.
We’ll have full game reports for both of Thursday’s doubleheaders, including a full gallery of photos from the SB/Hoopa games, on Friday.
