The Crusaders’ bats are coming to life as they get set to defend the Little 4 softball championship they won a year ago.
On Saturday, the St. Bernard’s girls scored in double digits in both games of a doubleheader at Middletown, giving them at least 10 runs in four of their last five games.
They took game one 11-6 and game two 13-4. While also playing some solid defense.
“We played well on both sides of the ball today,” SB head coach Hailey Wilson said. “Offensively we put together quality at-bats, tallying eight hits in the first game and stepping up with 14 in the second.
“Defensively, we were solid and made plays we needed to keep their offense in check.”
The Crusaders are getting contributions from throughout the entire lineup, with seven players hitting successfully in the opener and a remarkable 12 players getting at least one hit each in game two.
“It was a great team effort and I’m proud of how we competed in both games,” Wilson said.
Sophomore ace Oni Orcutt got both wins in the circle, throwing a complete game in each.
In game one, she allowed seven hits and two walks and struck out three, and in game two she allowed eight hits and a walk and struck out one.
Kyna Tuppa led the way at the plate in the opener and was 2-for-5, while Sarah Luna was 1-for-2 with a double and two walks and Makinsey Lemley went 1-for-4 with a double and a walk.
Logan Tallman also reached base three times in the win, finishing 1-for-3 with two walks, while Anna Dorsch and Chloe Grunden each was 1-for-3 with a walk, and Sahara Tupua was 1-for-5.
Dorsch and Lemley each also had a pair of hits in game two, with the latter also reaching base twice on a pair of hit-by-pitches.
Kyna Tupua and Coco Low each added a double, while Bailee White was 1-for-3 with two walks, Sahara Tupua was 1-for-4 with a pair of walks and Tallman was 1-for-4 with a walk.
Orcutt, Luna, Grunden, Tierra Baty and Teghan Smith each also had a base hit in the win.
The Crusaders, who are now 6-5, will open the Little 4 with a doubleheader at Ferndale on Thursday afternoon.
