St. Bernard’s Luke Brunton is quietly enjoying a very good start to the new baseball season.
On Saturday, the Crusaders junior pitched a complete-game five-inning no-hitter in the opening game of a doubleheader at Point Arena, leading his team to a 12-0 victory.
Brunton allowed just two walks and struck out nine.
The Crusaders carried the momentum into game two, winning 17-3 in six innings and improving to 5-3 as they set for a crucial Little 4 opener at home to Ferndale on Tuesday afternoon.
Brunton added a two-RBI triple and scored twice in Saturday’s opener.
“Brunton was awesome on the mound and had a big two-RB triple to lead us to victory,” St. Bernard’s head coach Matt Tomlin said.
Brunton was one of seven SB players to hit successfully in that game, a group that included freshman Max Collins, who finished 1-for-1 with an RBI hit in his very first varsity at-bat.
Mateo Reiman led the Crusaders at the plate and finished 2-for-2 with an RBI, while TC Rinker was 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI, and Tyler Maples was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Carson Costa also was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Quentin Ikeya went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Ikeya also saw action on the mound in game two, pitching two innings and allowing just two hits while striking out three.
Rinker also pitched two innings in that win, allowing one hit and one walk and striking out one.
Tyler Hinrichs got the win on the hill, pitching two innings of hitless ball and striking out four while allowing no walks.
Hinrichs helped his own case by going 3-for-4 at the plate and driving win four runs, while his younger brother, Henry Hinrichs, followed Collins’ lead by going 1-for-1 and getting his first varsity base hit.
Tyler Maples also had a good game at the plate and was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, as did Reiman, who capped a good day by going 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
Adam Wagner added two hits, including a double, as well as two RBIs and three runs, while Brunton added a double and three more RBIs, giving him five on the day.
Michael Manzi also had a double, an RBI and scored twice.
Tuesday’s game against the defending Little 4 champs is set for 4 p.m.
