By Ray Hamill — A pair of Fortuna Huskies take center stage this week in our weekly awards.

Senior Mariah Bravo is enjoying an outstanding season on the softball fields and that continued to be the case again this week as she led the Huskies to victories over Fort Bragg (15-5) and Eureka (21-1) on Monday and Tuesday.

Bravo is one of three senior stars on this year’s team, along with Faith Helms and Myra Hayes, and all three have been playing key roles in leading the Huskies to a 7-1 start.

Bravo was front and center once again at Eureka on Tuesday, setting the tone at the plate and getting the win in the circle.

And that makes her our choice for this week’s girls athlete of the week.

Bravo threw three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and no walks and striking out four.

She also made plenty of noise at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a walk, two doubles and a team-high four RBIs, as well as scoring three runs.

And she wasn’t the only Fortuna student-athlete to impress this week.

On Monday, Fortuna’s Dawson McWhorter got the new H-DNL boys golf season off to a flying start.

And that makes him our choice for this week’s boys athlete of the week.

McWhorter posted the low score of the day and led the Huskies to the team victory.

The standout was one of four Huskies to finish among the top-nine scores of the day as the Fortuna boys edged Arcata for the team victory.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Mariah Bravo

Fortuna Softball, Senior

Fresh off an all-league selection in basketball this past winter, Bravo has hit the ground running in softball this spring and has been among the most impressive players in the entire H-DNL so far.

Tuesday’s big performance was not her first of the spring.

Bravo is batting .500 through the opening eight games with team-highs in RBIs (18) and extra-base hits (seven), including a pair of home runs and a triple.

She also went 2-for-3 with four RBIs against Fort Bragg on Monday.

Fortuna Golf, Senior

McWhorter led the way on a competitive opening day in H-DNL boys golf at the Redwood Empire Golf and Country club in Fortuna on Monday.

The Huskies senior carded a round of 76, which edged McKinleyville’s Jake Gardner for the low score of the day by just one stroke.

Just four strokes separated the top four individual golfers on the day, which suggests this might be a competitive spring in league play.
