Fortuna’s McWhorter tops the field on competitive opening day

Dawson McWhorter and the Fortuna Huskies got the new H-DNL boys golf season off to a good start this week.

The Huskies hosted the season-opening round at the Redwood Empire Golf and Country Club on Monday and took the team victory on a competitive day of action.

McWhorter led the way and took the individual victory with a round of 76, just one stroke better than McKinleyville’s Jake Gardner.

Just four strokes separated the top four golfers on the day, all representing different schools.

And that suggests the race for this year’s championship should be an exciting one.

St. Bernard’s Breadon Simpson had the third best round of the day with a 78, followed by Arcata’s Mason Alway in fourth with a round of 79.

Alway’s teammate Ryzen Miller rounded out the top five with an 82.

Eight teams competed on opening day, with Arcata placing second.

The Huskies shot a combined 339, which was just eight strokes better than the Tigers (347).

There was a good battle for third place, with the Eureka boys (371) edging McKinleyville (373) and St. Bernard’s (378) just five strokes further back.

The Huskies had four golfers place in the top nine on the day.

Fortuna’s Rocklin Austrus placed sixth with a round of 83, just one stroke out of the top five.
