The McKinleyville Panthers showed no ill effects from a 13-day break in action, as they won their opening game at the Yreka baseball tournament on Friday.
The Panthers defeated Mt. Shasta 13-1 and improved to 6-0 on the season.
Freshman Jake Brunner had a big game in the win after stepping in at catcher for injured senior Riles Egbert.
The young player looked solid behind the plate and finished 2-for-3 on offense with a pair of doubles and an RBI.
Brunner was one of three Mack players to hit multiple doubles in the win.
Hunter Carper also hit two doubles, finishing 3-for-4 and driving in four runs, while Kolbey Stolpe went 2-for-2 with two doubles and three RBIs.
Carper rounded out a good all-around day with the win on the mound.
The sophomore standout pitched four innings, giving up just one hit and striking out four.
“We played good,” head coach Mike Dobrec said. “We had a week and a half off so it was good to get out on the field.”
Bryce Sargent also made some noise at the plate in the win and finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Joe Forbes, Pat Wilson, Jackson Kelly and Joe Tanno each also had a base hit.
Blake Santos closed out the game on the hill, pitching three innings and striking out six.
The two Mack pitchers combined to throw a two-hitter.
The Panthers will close out tournament play with a pair of games on Saturday.
They play Etna at 12:30 p.m. and Yreka at 3 p.m.
In other tournament action on Saturday, St. Bernard’s will play Del Norte at 10 a.m. in an all-local matchup.
On Friday, the Crusaders fell to Etna in a close game, 6-5, one day after they opened the tournament with a 5-2 win over the host school.
The Del Norte boys also won their tournament opener on Thursday, defeating Etna 9-3.
The Warriors continued tournament play on Friday evening against Mt. Shasta, winning 8-2.
They are now 3-4 on the season.
