Fortuna girls go 2-1 at weekend Cloverdale softball tournament

The Fortuna Huskies traveled to Cloverdale for a weekend tournament and finished 2-1 in their three games there.

They opened with a 13-0 win over Point Arena in four innings to go to 3-0 on the season, before beating Berean Christian 11-5 and falling to the host school 8-5 in the championship game.

The loss was their first of the season and they are now 4-1.

Three Fortuna pitchers combined to shut out the Point Arena bats, allowing just one hit and three walks and striking out seven in the win.

Junior Hailee Thompson led the team at the plate and finished with a pair of base hits and three RBIs, while teammate Sephora Machado added a double and an RBI.

The Huskies kept the momentum going against Berean Christian, rallying from a 5-3 deficit going into the final inning with eight unanswered runs.

Myra Hayes pitched a complete game for the win in the circle, overcoming some early struggles in the first inning.

According to the coaches, Hayes had some problems finding the strike zone in the opening inning and she walked four batters and gave up three runs.

But she would settle into the game and found her groove, getting out of the inning with a strikeout and a groundout to second baseman Mariah Bravo.

Hayes would give up just two more runs for the reminder of the game and struck out five batters.

Team captains Hayes, Bravo and Faith Helms led the way at the plate, along with Thompson.

Bravo hit a two-RBI double in the seventh inning to help key the late comeback.
