Former Wildcat makes immediate impact in collegiate debut

Former Ferndale Wildcat Isaak Kasso is making an immediate impact at the collegiate level after joining the Cal Poly Humboldt men’s track and field team.

The 2024 Ferndale High graduate debuted for the Jacks at the recent Sam Adams Combined Events, hosted by UC Santa Barbara, and placed fifth overall in his first-ever outdoor decathlon.

Remarkably, the 2024 North Coast Section Class A 110 meter hurdles champion achieved personal bests in seven of the 10 events.

He finished with 5,164 points at the meet which was held on Thursday and Friday of last week.

Kasso’s standout moment came in his signature event, the 110-meter hurdles, where he clocked in at 15.44 seconds and placed first.

The victory earned him 797 points, which was the highest single-event total of his meet. 

He also set new PRs in the 100 meters (11.74 seconds), high jump (1.69m), 400m (58.69 seconds), discus (32.08m), pole vault (3.05m) and 1500 meters (5:33.13). 

His strong all-around performance showcased his growth as a multi-event athlete and his potential to make an impact for the Lumberjacks.

He also secured valuable points in the long jump (5.64m), shot put (10.78m) and javelin throw (34.78m).

The multi-sport standout at Ferndale High also was a part of the school’s history-making first-ever state championship football team and was named to the inaugural MaxPreps Small-Town All-State football team.

In addition to his NCS championship in the 110m hurdles last spring, Kasso also won the league championship in the event.
