WEEKEND SOFTBALL ROUNDUP — Busy Saturday for local teams

The Fortuna Huskies continued their fast start to the new softball season with a 10-7 win over Lower Lake on Saturday, one day after they opened the new campaign with a 13-5 win over Napa.

The Huskies started Saturday’s game well and scored six runs in the top half of the first to take control, and they never trailed after that.

Senior Mariah Bravo led a five-hit team performance for the Huskies and finished 1-for-3 with a triple and an RBI, while also scoring a pair of runs.

Fortuna’s Isabel Sanchez also made some noise at the plate and finished 1-for-2 with an RBI, three runs and two stolen bases, while Myra Hayes was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Evalynn Little went 1-for-3 with a run.

Faith Helms also drove in a run in the win, while Olivia Hayes also had two stolen bases.

Bravo and Myra Hayes combined in the circle.

“I was pleased with our patience at the plate and the defense behind our pitchers,” Fortuna head coach Eric Helms said. “Our team used these games to gain valuable experience and hopefully build momentum into the rest of our season.”

Eureka 15, Ukiah 15

The Loggers entertained the Wildcats in a high-scoring back-and-forth showdown that featured five lead changes and ended in a tie.

The game was tied 8-8 after four innings, before the Loggers scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 12-8.

But it was far from over at that stage.

The visitors exploded for seven runs in their half of the sixth to retake the lead, before the Eureka girls rallied again and showed their clutch side with three runs on two outs in the bottom of the seventh to pull even again.

The game was called after seven because of time constraints, as the Wildcats had another game on Saturday at McKinleyville.

Cassie Breazeal also was 1-for-2 with an RBI for Eureka, while Megan Secor and Guiliana Burger each also had a base hit.

Bailey Brown pitched 5.2 innings for the hosts and had four strikeouts, while allowing just five earned runs.

Next up, the Loggers (0-1-1) will play West Valley on March 20.
