The Cal Poly Humboldt men remained in a tie for fourth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings with a victory over Cal State San Marcos on Thursday night.
The Jacks welcomed the Cougars to Lumberjack Arena for their penultimate regular-season game and won 78-59.
With the victory they improved to 16-10 overall and 12-9 in conference play, keeping pace in the standings with Cal Poly Pomona, which defeated Stanislaus State 72-61 on Thursday.
The victory also guarantees the Jacks they’ll finish above .500 in conference play for the first time since 2016.
The Humboldt men had already guaranteed themselves a spot in next week’s CCAA tournament.
The Jacks opened up a nine-point lead by halftime (39-30) and continued to dominate proceedings after the break, outscoring the visitors by 10 points in the second half.
Rob Diaz III scored a game-high 16 points in the win and Josiah Sanders aded 13 points and a team-best seven rebounds.
Ten different Humboldt players scored in the win.
San Marcos dropped to 6-21 overall and 6-15 in conference play.
The Humboldt men will close out the regular season at home against Sonoma State on Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m.
With the recent announcement that Sonoma State will be dropping all athletic programs for budgetary reasons this could be the Seawolves’ final ever game in the sport.
The Sonoma State men are 8-13 in CCAA action and 12-15 overall.
The Humboldt women also were in action on Thursday night and lost to San Marcos 57-55.
The Jacks battled until the final moments, but a late put-back with 0.5 seconds remaining gave Cal State San Marcos the victory.
The defeat was the third straight for the Jacks, who dropped to 9-18 overall and 8-13 in conference.
The Jacks led by four at halftime, but the visitors rallied with a big third quarter during which they outscored their hosts 22-16, and they held on down the stretch in a low-scoring fourth quarter.
Both teams managed just six points apiece in the final period.
San Marcos improved to 8-13 in conference and 8-19 overall.
The Humboldt women will close out their season on Saturday when they host Sonoma State at 3 p.m.
