Del Norte boys, Arcata girls crowned H-DNL champions

By Ray Hamill — The Del Norte boys and Arcata girls were crowned league champions at Saturday’s H-DNL Wrestling Championship at Arcata High School.

The  Warriors claimed five of the 14 individual boys titles, including standout seniors Curtis Bartley and Colton Schaad, and scored 186 points to comfortably out-distance the field, with Arcata second with 154.5 points.

The Arcata girls, meanwhile, won six of the 13 weight classes and scored 133 points, which was 67 points better than second-placed Eureka (66).

Bartley and Schaad were named the championship most outstanding lower and upper weight wrestlers, respectively, for the boys, while Del Norte’s Allie Bartley and Karlye Dodson were named most outstanding lower and upper weight wrestlers in the girls tournament, giving the Warriors a sweep of the MVP honors.

“Winning those four was pretty exciting,” longtime Del Norte head coach Clinton Schaad said. “I’ve never had that happen.”

The league title is the seventh straight for the dominating Warriors.

Curtis Bartley and Colton Schaad, who are each seeded No. 1 in the weight divisions for this week’s North Coast Section championships, comfortably took care of business on Saturday, as expected.

Curtis Bartley defeated Fortuna’s Tyson Evanow with a pin in the 138-pound final, while Colton Schaad defeated McKinleyville’s Lucas Dickey in the 165 final, also with a pin.

At 175, Del Norte’s Davian Johnson had one of the most impressive wins of the day, defeating Hoopa’s Raymond Baldy in the final.

“He’s only a second-year wrestler but he’s come so far,” Clinton Schaad said of the victorious Johnson. “He doesn’t miss a practice, he asks questions, he wants to learn. He’s really taken to the sport.”

Alex Osborne and Remington Escobedo each also won their weight divisions for Del Norte.

Osborne placed first at 113, defeating Fortuna’s Waylon Shaw in the final after the latter was forced to forfeit because of injury, while Escobedo defeated Arcata’s Chase Bickmore with a pin in the 150 final.

The Arcata boys also had five individual winners on the day, including impressive victories for Silven Yoder and Skylar Collenberg.

Yoder also is a second-year wrestler who has made some big strides this season and he defeated Del Norte standout James Gensaw Jr., with a 14-8 decision in the 132 final, while Collenberg defeated Eureka standout Knolin Callender with a pin in the heavyweight final.

After seeing his championship ambitions derailed by injury a year ago, Arcata senior Isaiah Bell got his white star at 144, defeating McKinleyville’s Leo Cosce with a technical fall in the final.

Tyler Shelton at 106 and Talon Villaruel at 126 each also took home a white star for the host school.

Shelton defeated McKinleyville’s Cael Johnson with a 12-4 decision in his final, while Villaruel got the better of McKinleyville’s Damarius Thompson with an 11-6 decision in his final.

The Hoopa Warriors had three winners on the day, including Donald Hostler (157), Nathan Edwards (190) and Antonio Correa (215), while McKinleyville’s Brandon Hillegeist rounded out the winning contingent with a victory over Del Norte’s Chulhs Bates at 120.

   

Hostler pinned Fortuna’s Brayden Timmerman i his final, while Edwards defeated St. Bernard’s Kohlton Hall with a technical fall in his final.

Correa, who is ranked second in his weight class in the NCS, also won his final with a pin, defeating Del Norte’s Dane Brown.

Eureka’s Logan Robertson (113), Fortuna’s Elias Golder (120), Del Norte’s Wyatt Sharp (126), McKinleyville’s Thurman Henderson (132), Arcata’s Jackson Hicks (138), Fortruna’s landon Leon (144), Fortuna’s Jack Chipman (150), Arcata’s Leo Marvin (157), Eureka’s John Gonsalves (165), St. Bernard’s Cedar Sutherland (175), Del Norte’s Braydan Johnson (190), Arcata’s James Dement (215) and Del Norte’s Yatish Patel (285) each also placed third in their weight divisions.

McKinleyville placed third in the team competition with 119.5 points, with Fortuna (107) and Hoopa (85.5) rounding out the top five.

In the girls tournament, meanwhile, Zoe Cappuccio, Maile Russell, Aleta Stubblefield, Rory Bickmore, Piper Bjorkstedt and Ash Osceola all won individual titles for the champion Tigers.

Cappuccio defeated Eureka’s Faith Her with a 10-8 decision in the 115 final, while Russell defeated Eureka’s Blair Moser with a pin in the 125 final.

Stubblefield also defeated a Eureka girl in her final, pinning Indy Lopez at 130, while Rory Bickmore took the white star at 155 with a forfeit win in the final, Bjorkstedt pinned Del Norte’s Bailey Fox in the 170 decider and Osceola won at 190 with a forfeit.

Three of the four Del Norte girls to compete at the league championships also placed first in their divisions, including Allie Bartley at 100 and Dodson at 140.

Allie Bartley pinned Hoopa’s Andee Lewis in her final and Dodson pinned Arcata’s Lillian Afrida in her final.

Golden Rule also won for Del Norte at 105, defeating Fortuna’s Tiffany Krause with a 14-6 decision in their final.

Other individual winners on the day included Fortuna’s Maliah Cheng (110), Hoopa’s Pamela Houston (120), Eureka’s Sydney Boone (135) and Fortuna’s Allison Watson (145).

Cheng pinned Eureka’s Anysi Her in her final, while Houston pinned Arcata’s Autumn Pires-Moore in her final, Boone won by forfeit and Watson pinned Arcata’s Melody Arguelles in their final.

Arcata’s Jada Lusk (110), Hoopa’s Allison Mace (125) and Ferndale’s Abby Bibby (130) each also placed third in their divisions, while Hoopa’s Audrina Mace was fourth at 130.

Del Norte placed third in the final team standings with 57 points, with Fortuna (44) and Hoopa (37) rounding out the top five.
