Several local high school wrestlers continued to build some momentum ahead of the 2025 postseason with another strong showing by the H-DNL at this past weekend’s Redwood Empire Classic at Ukiah.
Del Norte’s Chulhs Bates and Hoopa’s Antonio Correa, each of whom is expected to make some noise in the upcoming North Coast Section tournaments, were both named outstanding tournament wrestlers.
Bates placed first in the 120-pound division and was named tournament Most Outstanding Lower Weight Wrestler, while Correa took first place at 215 and was named Outstanding Upper Weight Wrestler.
Four other Del Norte Warriors also placed first in their respective weight classes, including impressive freshman Chey Gensaw at 144.
Aaron Burger also placed first for the Del Norte boys at 190, as did Allie Bartley (100) and Bailey Fox (170) for the Del Norte girls in their tournament.
Despite traveling without numerous wrestlers who were at home sick, six Del Norte boys finished in the top three in their weight classes, showcasing the depth of the team this winter.
In addition to the three winners, Wyatt Sharp placed second at 126, as did Remington Escobedo at 150, while Davion Johnson finished third at 175.
The Warriors placed third overall in the boys team competition.
Also impressing for the Del Norte boys, Dane Brown (215) and Yatish Patel (285) each finished seventh.
Some other locals also big weekends in tournament action, including Ferndale freshman Preston Killingsworth.
The young Wildcats grappler, who appears to have a bright future on the H-DNL mats, finished second to Gensaw in the 144-pound bracket.
“He wrestled extremely well all weekend,” Ferndale head coach Levi Buck said of the young standout who opted to compete at the varsity level for the tournament. “He made a mistake in the finals and (Gensaw) capitalized on it, but he is performing at a high level and that’s what we want going into the league tournament.”

Abby Bibby also placed first for the Wildcats in the girls tournament, while Cash Mobley placed second in his bracket and Brandon Bailey and Kyle Cox each placed third.
In addition to Correa, Hoopa sisters Audrina and Allison Mace also impressed for the Warriors girls team, as did outstanding freshman Andee Lewis.
Lewis, who has quickly established herself as one of the top girls wrestlers in the H-DNL in her first winter competing on the high school mats, placed second in her bracket.
Audrina, a senior, placed third in her weight class and Allison, a freshman, finished fourth in her division.
Del Norte JVs Carl Turner (sixth at 113), Eddie Norris (third at 138), Coulter Chilcott (third at 157), Brody Burger (fifth at 165) and Brandon Startcher (sixth at 175) also impressed in tournament action.
A young Fortuna grappler also impressed over the weekend at the Goddess of the Vine tournament in Concord.
Clara Posey took first place in the 120-pound division of the JV tournament.
No details of how the other H-DNL wrestlers fared at the Ukiah tournament were immediately available.
