Both Eureka High basketball teams won challenging road games on Saturday, as did the St. Bernard’s boys at Del Norte.
The Eureka girls traveled to play University Prep and ended the Panthers’ nine-game winning streak with a 55-47 victory.
The win was the third straight for the Eureka girls and their 13th in their last 14 games as they improved to 14-2.
Junior guard Nashaya Williams has established herself as one of the Loggers most impressive players in recent weeks and that continued to be the case on Saturday as she finished with a team-high 14 points.
The game, however, went right down to the wire, with no more than three points separating the two teams for most of the day until late.
The Loggers were up by just two points late in the game when the University coach was called for a technical, with the clutch Tiara Maualuga making both free throws.
On the ensuing possession Williams hit a huge 3-pointer to put Eureka up by seven.
The home team would cut the deficit to two late, but the Loggers held on down the stretch.
“We kept our composure and pulled out a big win,” Eureka head coach Cliff Napoleon said.
Samara Gaither added 13 points for Eureka, while Maualuga chipped in 11.

The Loggers travel to Ukiah for a non-conference game on Saturday and pulled out a six-point win.
The ever-consistent Elijah Estrada finished with a team-high 14 points for the Loggers, who won their third straight game and improved to 14-4.
“We had good contributions from a lot of guys in this game,” Eureka head coach Jimmy Rodgers said. “We played good defense in a lot of ways,.”
Trenton Gerber also impressed for the visitors with a good all-around game.
The senior finished with 13 points, six assists and five steals.
Ryder Mitchell also impressed and had a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.
“They played with poise, they played with effort,” Rodgers added of his players. “I’m so proud of them. It’s a special group of young men.”

The Crusaders continued to roll with a big non-conference win in what was a back-and-forth game in Crescent City.
“Del Norte played hard, and so did our guys,” St. Bernard’s assistant coach Pat Shanahan said.
The always dangerous Liam Dyer scored a team-high 21 points for the visitors and added nine rebounds, while Latimer Prince also continued to impress and added 17 points and eight rebounds.
“Liam played extremely well and hist some timely buckets when we needed them,” Shanahan added. “Prince was able to get to the paint and finish some key possessions. And his rebounding was crucial to this win as well.”
Garrett Shanahan, who has played a key role for St. Bernard’s all season, had his best all-around game of the season and finished with a double-double.

The sophomore forward had 12 points and 12 rebounds.
“Our team communication took a step forward today,” said Pat Shanahan, whose team won a fourth straight game and its 11th in the last 12 games. “And without that the result could have been different.
“It was just a hard-fought win on the road.”
The Crusaders improved to 13-3, while Del Norte dropped to 12-8.
No scoring stats were immediately available for Del Norte.
The Warriors defense held the visitors to their second lowest points total in the last 14 games.
“Our defense held St. Bernard’s to 55 points, (which) should be enough,” Del Norte head coach Cris Rice said. “But we have to be more diverse in our offense, especially down the stretch.”
