Cal Poly Humboldt head coach Lennie Zalesky described it as a “special night for Humboldt wrestling,” as the Jacks hosted a dual meet for the first time in 33 years on Friday night.
The local university recently brought back the men’s team for the time since 1992 and this is the first season the Jacks have competed on the mats since then.
On Friday, they hosted Simpson University at Lumberjack Arena and a large crowd showed up to witness the historic return of a program that has a storied tradition.
The Humboldt men dominated the match, winning 39-10.
“This was a special night for Humboldt wrestling,” Zalesky said afterwards. “The energy from the fans and alumni, paired with the resilience shown by our team, made this return unforgettable.”
The evening was highlighted by some thrilling performances, capped by Jayson Victoria’s stunning comeback victory in the 149-pound bout.
With the crowd urging him on, Victoria staged an incredible comeback, sealing an 8-7 decision in the final moments.
According to a Cal Poly Humboldt press release, “His determination and grit brought the fans to their feet and secured his place as the night’s hero.”
The Jacks won seven of the 10 matches and secured their first dual match win of the season.
The Humboldt men will be back in action next weekend in Colorado, taking on Colorado School of Mines on Friday and Colorado State University Pueblo.
