By Ray Hamill — The Little 4 tips off on Thursday night with a pair of games scheduled, and the big question as we head into conference play is can anyone stop the St. Bernard’s Crusaders from defending the championship they won a year ago?
The Crusaders are not just the best team in the conference last winter, but they would go on to win a state championship.
And with most of their players back from that team, including CalHiSports Division-IV state player of the year Laila Florvilus, they will begin conference play as the team to beat.
That, however, doesn’t mean they won’t be challenged, and some of their conference opponents have every reason to believe they can battle for the title.
Ferndale and Hoopa, in particular, have impressed through the first month of the season and both schools have posted some impressive wins in tournament action.
The South Fork girls also have shown plenty of improvement early in the season and will be eager to show they’re not just here to make up the numbers.
Conference play begins with a pair of games on Thursday night, including a big showdown at Ferndale between the host Wildcats and the defending Little 4 champs.
Also on Thursday, the South Fork girls will host Hoopa in their conference opener.
Let us know who you think will win this year’s conference in our readers poll and we’ll publish the results before the Little 4 tips off next week.
Readers can vote up to once a day.
