The Fortuna boys basketball team appears to be finding form again ahead of next week’s conference opener.
On Friday night, the Huskies traveled to Kelseyville and came away with a 46-43 win over the Knights.
The win was the fourth in six games for the Huskies, who look like they have put a disappointing mid-December run behind them.
More importantly, it came against another Division-4 team and will help them in their bid to make the North Coast Section playoffs later in the season.
Fortuna head coach Norm Sotomayor, who was missing some key players for the game, described it as a “gutty” win.
“This was an important win if we want to keep hopes alive for postseason,” the coach said.
Jack Stacy led the way for the Huskies and scored a team-high 22 points, as well as pulling down seven rebounds and adding three steals.
The Huskies knew the importance of the game and started strong, opening up a 10-point lead after the opening quarter.
However, the Knights would come storming back in the second quarter and cut the deficit to two heading into halftime.
It was a back-and-forth game after that with both teams battling hard all the way.
The Huskies secured the win with some solid defense, giving up just three points in the opening quarter.
“Our defense led the way, especially in the first quarter,” Sotomayor said.
Owen Wallen also impressed in the win and added eight points to go with eight rebounds, while Cage Collins chipped in eight points and Jace Barsanti had six points and a team-high six assists.
Hunter Reback also had eight rebounds.
With league play beginning next week, the Huskies will play mostly Division-3 teams — Eureka Arcata and Del Norte — for the remainder of their schedule, which won’t affect their NCS standing.
And Sotomayor is expecting a battle in every Big 5 game.
“Things only getter tougher now,” her said. “Our league is stacked with quality teams that compete and know how to win.”
The Huskies are now 7-9.
They open conference play at home against Arcata on Friday night.
