Del Norte boys continue to roll; girls fall to strong U Prep team

The Del Norte Warriors stretched their winning streak to seven straight games in boys basketball with a victory over Kelseyville on Friday night.

The surging Warriors won the game 62-54 and improved to 11-2 on the season.

Lyon Rigden scored a team-high 18 points in the win and also had five assists and five steals.

Ryan O’Laughlin also impressed for Del Norte and finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, while teammates Aidan Rice and Tanner Dowd each chipped in seven points.

Rice also dished out nine assists, while Dowd added five rebounds.

The Warriors, who are one of the hottest teams in the H-DNL through the first month of the season, will play at the Enterprise tournament later this week.

They open against University Prep on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

They tip off the Big 5 next week at Arcata on Wednesday night.

The Warriors got a good pre-league test on Friday night from a quality University Prep team that improved to 11-1.

The Panthers came out strong and shot well from the perimeter on their way to a second-early-season win over the Warriors.

“Both times we’ve played them they shot the ball really well from the perimeter,” Del Norte head coach Dylan Nelson said. “(U Prep guard) Joanna Warren sees the floor extremely well and finds the shooter.”

Jaylee Keeling scored a team-high 17 points for the Warriors, who saw a six-game winning streak end, while Tsinte Steinruck added nine points.

Makana Baugh chipped in six points for Del Norte and Brooklyn Carter finished with five points.

“U Prep is a good team, that’s why we scheduled them,” Nelson said. “It’s important to play teams that challenge us.

“Appreciate coach (Steven) Shuster and their willingness to make the trip.”

Nelson hopes the loss will serve as a lesson for his team, as the Warriors get set to open conference play next week.

“Our guards need to be able to get the ball into the offense quicker,” the coach said. “We missed easy shots and they made them.”
