GIRLS ROUNDUP — Huskies overcome big deficit to win in OT

The emerging Jorlynn Villalvazo scored 18 points to help lead the Fortuna Huskies to a 46-43 overtime win against Orland in an exciting semifinal at the Orland Lady Trojan Invitational tournament on Friday night.

Villalvazo was hugely influential in leading the Huskies back from a 16-point deficit to force the extra period on another busy day of tournament action for local teams.

“Jorlynn has developed so much for us as a player and team leader,” head coach Tom Chapman said. “She was a force tonight.”

She wasn’t the only standout in what was an impressive team performance.

Jaydyn Dalton also helped key the big comeback with a strong second half and finished with eight points.

“Jaydyn had a phenomenal second half and overtime,” Chapman added. “She was tenacious on defense and did great attacking the basket.”

The game went right down to the wire.

With just 1.3 seconds remaining in overtime, Fortuna’s Mariah Bravo came up with a loose ball and scored the winning basket while being fouled, before adding a free throw.

Chapman also praised the Fortuna JVs, who were in attendance and cheered the team on their way to victory.

“They gave the team a big boost of energy to mount the fourth-quarter comeback,” Chapman said. 

Both Fortuna teams will play for a tournament championship on Saturday.

The JVs play Orland at 6 p.m. and the varsity girls play Durham at 7:30 p.m.

Eureka 56, Analy 28

Eureka senior Samara Gaither led the Loggers to a second win in two days at the Maria Carrillo tournament.

Samara and the red-hot Loggers defeated Analy and improved to 10-1.

The victory was the eighth straight for the Eureka girls, with Gaither scoring a game-high 19 points.

Sophomore Tiara Maualuga added 11 points in the win.

All of the Eureka players featured in the game, as they started fast and led 14-0 after the opening quarter.

The Loggers will close out tournament play against Maria Carrillo on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.

McKinleyville 39, Marin Academy 29

McKinleyville 39, North Monterey County 24

McKinleyville won the battle of the Cheeks on Friday night, as they continued a successful three-game road trip.

Facing off against his brother Josh, Mack head coach Jacob Cheek and his players defeated North Monterey County by 15 points for their third straight win.

Bailee Box and Gabby Watson led the Panthers in scoring with 11 points each, while Ahti Allen added six points, all of them in the fourth quarter.

The Panthers began their road trip with a 10-point win at Marin Academy on Thursday night.

Tatum Fisher scored a team-high 10 points in that win, while Watson added eight points and MaryAnn Som and Box each chipped in six points.

The Panthers, who are now 8-2, will conclude their road trip at Miramonte on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Ferndale 47, Lower Lake 30

The Wildcats bounced back from a tournament-opening loss to Healdsburg at Kelseyville on Thursday and defeated Lower Lake by 17 points on Friday.

Tinnley Pidgeon scored a team-high 16 points in the win, while the ever-dangerous Michaela Ellsmore added 14 points.

With the win, the Cats improved to 6-3.

Madison Gossi added nine points in Friday’s win.

The Ferndale girls close out tournament play against Cloverdale on Saturday ay noon.

St. Bernard’s 50, Pinole Valley 43

The Crusaders faced one of their biggest challenges of the early season at the Kelseyville tournament and passed with flying colors.

St. Bernard’s senior Laila Florvilus scored a game-high 34 points and was “absolutely brilliant,” according to her head coach Matt Tomlin.

“The current Division-4 California player of the year, Laila Florvilus, had a special performance,” Tomlin said.

Her teammate Samantha Sundberg added 11 points, as the Crusaders improved to 2-0 in tournament play and 8-0 on the season.

“We have so much respect for Pinole Valley and their great players and coaches,” Tomlin said. “Our ladies stepped up and played as one team and found a way to win a very physical and intense basketball game against a very good team.

“I am so proud of our young ladies.”

Several SB girls stood out on the defensive end, led by senior Aliyah Vigil.

Tomlin also praised the defensive performances of Carli Baum, Alyssa Boham and Sahara Tupua.

The Crusaders will conclude tournament play when they Kelseyville in the championship game on Saturday night at 6 p.m.

   

Del Norte 52, Lassen 17

The Del Norte girls stretched their winning streak to four straight games with a dominating performance against Lassen at the Central Valley tournament on Friday.

Freshman Jaylee Keeling led a balanced team performance with a game-high 13 points, while teammate Hailey Meorke added eight points.

“Total team game,” is how Del Norte head coach Dylan Nelson described the performance. “Everyone contributed. We came out and played aggressive defense and rebounded to set the tone.”

Brooklyn Carter and Bailey Nunez each added six points in the win, while Deja Payne chipped in four points.

“We were able to go on a few extended runs,” the coach added.

With the win, the Warriors improved to 7-3.

A busy Del Norte team will play a pair of games on Saturday, including a matchup against Trinity.

Arcata 68, Carlmont 57

The Tigers won for the fifth time in six games with an 11-point victory over Carlmont at the Justin-Siena Christmas Classic on Friday.

With the win, the Tigers improved to 6-4.

No stats were immediately available.
