Fortuna and Del Norte boys drop their tournament openers

The Fortuna and Del Norte boys will try to bounce back from tournament-opening defeats on Friday.

The Huskies played the late game at the Arcata Boys Invitational Tournament and fell 64-50 to Piner.

Junior Jack Stacy had a big night for the H-DNL school and scored a team-high 21 points in the loss in a game that got away from the Huskies in the second half.

The two teams were tied 13-13 after the opening quarter, but Piner began to take control in the second and carried a seven-point advantage into halftime.

The Prospectors continued to pull away in the third, outscoring Fortuna 19-12 to stretch the lead to 14 going into the fourth quarter.

Lolo Payne also impressed for the Huskies and finished with nine points and seven rebounds, while Jace Barsanti added seven points and four assists.

Hunter Reback led the Huksies on the boards and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.

The loss was the fourth straight for Fortuna, which dropped to 3-4 on the season.

Piner improved to 4-2.

The AIBT continues on Friday.

The Huskies will be back in action at 5 p.m. when they take on Red Bluff.

Im other tournament games on Friday, McKinleyville plays South Medford at 3:30 p.m., Eureka plays Montgomery at 6:30 p.m. and Arcata plays Piner at 8 p.m.

The De Norte boys, meanwhile, are in action at the Cloverdale tournament and also dropped their opening game on Thursday, falling 66-45 to Rancho Cotate.

The loss, which was their second straight, drops the Warriors to 4-2.

According to Del Norte head coach Cris Rice, it was a “rough loss.”

“Kids came out flat and battled for three quarters,” the coach added. “Rancho Cotate is a solid team, but we did not execute well on either side of the ball and could not get open looks to go down. Have to improve on both sides of the ball.”

Michael Webster continued his strong start to the season for Del Norte and finished with a team-high 24 points.

The Warriors will try to get back to winning ways when they play Orland on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
