BOYS BASKETBALL — Action-packed day in store for H-DNL teams

Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – The Arcata Tigers will play West Hills at the McKinleyville tournament on Friday night.

By Ray Hamill — All nine H-DNL varsity boys teams are in action at various tournaments this weekend, and all nine are scheduled to play on Friday.

Arcata, McKinleyville and Ferndale are playing at the McKinleyville tournament, with the Tigers and Panthers both winning their tourney openers on Thursday.

Arcata defeated San Lorenzo 70-55 to go to 3-0 on the season, and McKinleyville defeated Ferndale 57-13 to go to 2-0.

The Wildcats dropped to 0-2.

On Friday, Ferndale plays Eagle Point at 5:30 p.m., followed by McKinleyville and Woodland Christian at 7 and Arcata and West Hills at 8:30.

If both McKinleyville and Arcata win, they will face off in Saturday’s championship game.

Del Norte and Eureka, meanwhile, are competing at the Yreka tournament and both won their tournament openers on Thursday and could also face off in Saturday’s championship game if each can win their semifinals on Friday.

Del Norte defeated Klamath Union 62-54 and Eureka edged Red Bluff 62-60.

On Friday, Eureka (1-0) plays Orland at 3 p.m. and Del Norte (3-0) plays Yreka at 6:30 p.m.

The Hoopa boys, meanwhile, are at the Durham tournament and dropped their opener on Thursday, falling 55-43 to the host school.

The Warriors, who are 1-2, will play Anderson at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

The South Fork Cubs are playing at the Redwood Classic at Anderson Valley High School and won their first two tournament games on Wednesday, improving to 3-0 on the season.

The high-scoring Cubs defeated Laytonville 71-29 and Round Valley 79-62.

They will play a tournament semifinal on Friday evening.

St. Bernard’s (0-0) also is in action on Friday at the Quincy tournament and will play Portola at 5 p.m.

The Fortuna boys, meanwhile, suffered their first loss of the young season at the Harlan Carter tournament in Redding.

The Huskies fell 63-32 to Foothill and dropped to 3-1.

Lolo Payne led the Huskies offensively with eight points in the loss, while Jace Barsanti added six points on a low-scoring night for the team.

Payne also had three steals, while Hunter Reback led the team with 11 rebounds.

The Huskies will try to get back on track when they play University Prep on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
