BASKETBALL ROUNDUP — First busy night of the year for H-DNL teams

By Ray Hamill — Despite missing some key players who are still playing football, the Arcata boys got the new season off to a winning start on the first busy night of the season for the H-DNL teams.

The Tigers tipped off a two-game road trip with s 61-54 win at Maria Carrillo in Santa Rosa on Friday night.

Luke Moxon scored a game-high 24 points in the win while teammate Dawson Vallerga added 12 points and Lucian Rodrigez chipped in eight points.

“We were a little discombobulated at times. It was the first game of the season,” Arcata head coach Kellen Maynard said. “But we started to wear them down in the second quarter and in the second half we did well.”

The Tigers traveled with 10 players and are expecting to add around five more when the school’s football season ends.

Boys

Del Norte 66, Hoopa 37

A big defensive night led the Warriors to a season-opening win over Hoopa.

Del Norte led 25-9 after the opening quarter and never looked back.

The Warriors got big performances from Michael Webster, Ryan O’Laughlin and sophomore Justin Cushmann.

“It was a totally team effort,” said head coach Cris Rice, who added his team played with “intensity.”

The Warriors will host Ferndale on Tuesday.

Fortuna 59, Ukiah 47

The Huskies improved to 2-0 on the season.

Ty Roberts scored a team-high 16 points in the win, while teammate Cage Collins added 12 points, Lolo Payne had 10 points and Jack Stacy chipped in eight.

Hunter Reback added eight rebounds and Chandler Crenshaw had seven, while Jace Barsanti dished out a team-high seven assists and Stacy had six assists.

Girls

Eureka 60, Vallejo 18

The Eureka girls won for the second time this week, rolling over Vallejo with a big second-half performance.

Senior Samara Gaither continued her impressive start to the new season and finished with a game-high 22 points, while Tiara Maualuga added 10 points and Madelyn Fazio chipped in seven.

“We were just going through the motions in the first half, but we came out of halftime on a mission,” said head coach Cliff Napoleon, whose team held Vallejo to just three points over the final two quarters.

   

Hoopa 61, Del Norte 57

Ivy Lamebear led Hoopa with 21 points as the Warriors secured an impressive win against the Big 5 school.

Maggie Morris added 16 points in the win, while teammate Wau’Kel Blake chipped in eight points.
