Cal Poly Humboldt Athletics – Kyle Frelow
The Cal Poly Humboldt men’s basketball team tipped off the new season at the West Region Crossover Classic tournament in Bellingham, Wash., over the weekend, splitting a pair of tournament games.
The Jacks opened with an 88-67 win over Simon Fraser on Friday night and followed that with a close 78-75 loss to Western Washington on Saturday.
Rob Diaz III and Kyle Frelow were particularly impressive for the Jacks and were each named to the all-tournament team.
Diaz averaged an impressive 20.5 points per game on 18-of-28 shooting and had four steals.
Frelow averaged 12 points and nine rebounds, while shooting an efficient 11-for-17 from the field.
Frelow’s impact was felt on both ends, particularly in the paint, where his rebounding and defensive presence (five total steals) had a big impact for the team.
The Jacks will play their home opener on Tuesday night (Nov. 12) against Simpson at 7 p.m.
The Cal Poly women were also in action over the week and dropped a pair of games in Rocklin, falling 83-75 to Alaska Fairbanks and 81-48 to Alaska Anchorage.
Dylan Lovett scored a team-high 17 points in the opener, while teammate Kaiija Lesane added 15 points and seven rebounds.
Riley Sanz scored a team-high 10 points against Anchorage as the Jacks were held to 12 or fewer points in three of the four quarters.
The Humboldt women will be back in action when they travel on Concordia University in Irvine on Saturday at 4 p.m.
