Redwoods men tied for most wins in the state early in the season

It’s still very early in the season, but the College of the Redwoods men’s basketball team is off to another outstanding start.

After Friday night’s 79-64 win over San Mateo in their home opener, the Corsairs improved to 4-1 and are now tied for most wins in the state.

Several players have been stepping up early in the new campaign and on Friday it was Mason Mottashed who led the way, finishing with a team-high 25 points, including seven of his team’s 11 3-pointers.

But the Corsairs had to battle.

“This was a well prepared opponent, who were well coached, and our guys showed a lot of maturity tonight,” CR head coach Ryan Bisio said. “Our emotional intelligence showed up on both sides of the ball big time.”

Ty Dahlin also continued his impressive start to the new season and added 18 points in the win.

The victory capped a busy week for the CR men, who have played all five games in just eight days to hit the ground running, including road trips to Napa and Ukiah.

“This was not an easy week in terms of the quality of opponents we played and the wonky travel itinerary,” Bisio added. “To see us growing in real time in games was thrilling to be a part of.”

Next up for CR is a trip to the Mendocino Tournament, which tips off on Nov. 21.

The Corsairs will open tournament play against American River.
