Medina shines for Redwoods ahead of Friday’s home opener

Former Fortuna Husky Alfonso Medina enjoyed a breakout game at the collegiate level on Thursday night, leading College of the Redwoods to a 79-61 win at Mendocino College.

Mendina scored a team-best 22 points and showed why he was named the 2024 Humboldt Sport Boys Basketball Player of the Year as a senior in high school.

“Alfonso was spectacular,” CR head coach Ryan Bisio said. “He played with a real menacing probe all night The perfect combination of aggressiveness and patience.”

It hasn’t taken Medina long to impress his new coaches and he looks set to play a key role fr his new team.

“There’s coachable and then there’s Alfonso Medina,” Bisio said. “He has the openness and the talent to harmonize with others in a variety of ways. When we asked him to be more aggressive this week, he chuckled and said ‘you got it.’”

He wasn’t the only player to impress for the Corsairs, who played the game without their leading scorer this season, Houston Klug.

Isai Sow added 15 points and Marcos Rosales scored 12, as the visitors started fast and quickly ran out to a 17-5 start.

Ty Dahlin also had 10 points.

“Defensively we rebounded the ball well enough and found some sturdy traction midway through the second half,” Bisio said. “A mature defensive steadiness in a road game with young guys.”

The Corsairs, who improved to 3-1, also finished with seven 3-pointers for the night.

The CR men will play their home opener against College of San Mateo on Friday night at 5 p.m.
