New College of the Redwoods women’s basketball head coach Bree Northern didn’t have to wait long for her first win in the job.
On Friday night, the Corsairs tipped off the new season with a 61-53 victory over Napa Valley at the College of the Redwoods Crossover Tournament on what was a good night for CR basketball.
The CR men also tipped off the new season with a win on Friday night.
The Corsairs are in Napa for the Live Like Geno Foundation Tip Off Tournament and opened with an 80-76 win over Sac City.
The CR women had three players finish in double digits in scoring, including Moriah Bowles, who had a team-high 20 points.
Alia Prentiss also impressed and finished with 11 points, while Aniah Gaither finished with 10 points.
“I am super proud of the ladies,” said Northern, who takes over this year from Jain Tuey. “They played super hard and never gave up.”
The CR men’s game, meanwhile, was an entertaining back-and-forth showdown.
The Corsairs enjoyed the better of the early exchanges and led by as many as 12 in the first half, but Sac City would come storming back and the teams were deadlocked 39-39 at the interval.
The momentum continued to swing Sac City’s way early in the second half as the Panthers opened up a five-point lead, but the Corsairs would settle down on both sides of the ball and began to take control, opening up a 15-point lead with just under six minutes remaining.
However, the game was far from over and Sac City would come storming back a second time to make for an interesting finish.
The Panthers pulled to within four points in the final minute, but the CR defense held firm down the stretch for the season-opening victory.
CR was led in scoring by Ty Dahlin, who finished with 18 points, while Isai Snow added 13 points.
Brandon Lucas and Josh Neal each also impressed and chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Both CR teams will be back in action on Saturday.
The women will take on Santa Rosa JC at 3 p.m., with Lassen and Napa also facing off in tournament action at 1 p.m.
The CR men will continue tournament play in Napa against Los Medanos at 5 p.m., before closing out a busy weekend against Napa Valley on Sunday at 2 p.m.
