Eureka’s Everett Docherty got his first career league win with his best-ever performance over a 5K course in the fourth H-DNL cross country meet of the fall at the Eureka Municipal Golf Course on Wednesday.
The senior beat the field by 15 seconds and crossed the finish line in a time of 16 minutes, 42.13 seconds.
His strong showing, however, wasn’t enough to give the Loggers the team win.
The Arcata Tigers had four runners finish in the top nine and took another team victory, scoring 34 points.
Eureka (41), Del Norte (84), Fortuna (91) and Brookings-Harbor (125) rounded out the top five.
Impressive Fortuna freshman Juan Ornelas continued his outstanding debut campaign at the high school level with a second-place finish after back-to-back wins at the last two league races.
Ornelas finished in a time of 16:57.97, with Arcata’s Levi Browne third in a time of 16:58.37.
Eureka sophomore Ryder Bullman placed fourth in a time of 17:01.87, followed by Del Norte senior Dylan Rodriguez in fifth (17:02.88).
Arcata’s Ocean Walker, Evan Poston and Eoin McGoldrick placed sixth through eighth, respectively, with Eureka’s Chase Jimenez in ninth and Arcata’s Parker Pierson 10th.
Impressive sophomore Claire Gast of Eureka won the girls race for her third victory in three league races this fall.
Charlie Vanderpool led Northcoast Prep in 17th, while Franky Abers led Brookings-Harbor in 23rd and Brenden Knight led Hoopa Valley in 34th.
The H-DNL season continues next Wednesday at Fortuna.
