Warriors honored as H-DNL prepares for annual sportsmanship summit

By Ray Hamill — The Little 5 schools are setting a good example when it comes to good sportsmanship.

This past spring, the Hoopa Warriors became the fifth of the conference schools to be honored in the past two years for their sportsmanship after being named winners of the H-DN 2024 Spring Sportsmanship Award.

The H-DN Sportsmanship Award is the brainchild of the Student Athlete Advisory Council, which initiated the awards at the start of the 2022/23 school year.

The award is handed out to one of the H-DNL’s 11 schools after each of the fall, winter and spring seasons and is based on input from three different groups — officials, coaches and school administrators.

The league also awards an annual sportsmanship banner for the school that shows the best sportsmanship over the course of all three seasons.

The South Fork Cubs received the sportsmanship banner for the 2022/23 school year and the league will be announcing the banner winner for the 2023/24 school year at the H-DN Annual Sportsmanship Summit later this month.

Hoopa joins previous award winners Northcoast Prep, St. Bernard’s and Ferndale, the latter of which is a two-time recipient.

Six of the seven season awards presented so far have gone to Little 5 schools, with Fortuna also receiving the honor for the fall of 2023.

The second annual HDN Sportsmanship Summit will be held on Oct 21 at College of the Redwoods.

The event will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is open to student athletes, coaches and administrators.

The event is not open to the public, but if a parent or community member is interested in attending they can contact the league school of the community they live in to see if there are available spots.
