With three rounds of league play to go, it’s looking more and more like Madyson Nelson and the Arcata Tigers won’t be caught in the chase for the H-DNL girls golf championship.
On Thursday Nelson posted the low score of the day for the fourth time in four rounds of league play, solidifying her lead in the individual season standings.
Nelson shot a 97 at Beau Pre Golf Course to beat the field by three strokes and stretched her lead on the season to a commanding 32 strokes as we head toward the stretch run of league play.
It was the third time this season that the senior standout broke 100, the only three times any golfer in the league has managed that this year.
And she wasn’t the only Tiger to impress.
The Arcata girls had three of the top four scores on the day and the runaway league leaders took the team win for the fourth time in four rounds of H-DNL play.
They now hold an insurmountable 190-stroke lead in the team season standings.
Arcata’s Lily Cunningham had the second best round of the day with a 100, which was the fourth best individual round of the season for any of the H-DNL girls, eclipsed only by three of Nelson’s rounds this fall.
St. Bernard’s Ingrid Monaghan carded the third best round of the day with a 103, followed by Arcata’s Lucia Hernandez and Del Norte’s Jaylee Keeling, who each shot a 108.
St. Bernard’s Estella Monaghan and Arcata’s Toni Diaz had the next best scores with rounds of 112, followed by Eureka’s Sophia Zwald (113), Del Norte’s Bria Larson (115), Eureka’s Hailey Forster (116), McKinleyville’s Addie Morrision (118) and Del Norte’s Brooklyn Carter (118).
While Nelson is the clear frontrunner for the league title (291), there is an exciting battle shaping up behind her, with Ingrid Monaghan and Cunningham tied for second place (323).
Hernandez is a further six strokes back in fourth (329), followed by Larson (334), Estella Monaghan (335) and Morrison (337).
Del Norte is currently second in the team standings, followed by McKinleyville in third.
