By Ray Hamill — It was a good night for the Arcata Tigers in volleyball in more ways than one on Tuesday.

The Tigers closed out the first half of their conference schedule with a three-sets win over McKinleyville and improved to 3-1 in the Big 5.

The win keeps pressure on conference leaders, the Del Norte Warriors, who had a bye on Tuesday and remain 3-0 in the Big 5.

More importantly for the Arcata girls, they had a very successful Pink Night.

The annual event raised close to $2000 for the Arcata Breast and GYN Health Project and the game was played in front of a packed house with enthusiastic fans dressed in pink for the occasion.

The Tigers won the game by a score of 25-19, 25-10, 25-21.

Harper Appy continued to play a key role for the home team and finished with 26 assists and four aces, while the impressive Nora Brumbaugh had a night to remember with 11 kills and four aces.

According to head coach Laurie Griffith, Brumbaugh “had a stellar match.”

Bella Campbell also had a good match for the home team and added 10 digs and four aces, while Addie Day finished with three aces to round out a good team performance serving.

The loss dropped the Panthers to 0-3 in conference play, but a young team continued to make strides despite an injury to the team’s starting setter.

“The team rallied around her and went with an entirely new lineup and fought hard throughout the remainder of the match,” head coach Ashley Washburn said.

Among the standouts for the team, Libero Hannah McCullough finished with 27 digs.

Next up, on Thursday, the Tigers have a bye in conference play, while the Panthers will play Fortuna.
