BOYS SOCCER — League leading Tigers shut out the Warriors

The Tigers made it five wins in five league games with a 2-0 victory over the Del Norte Warriors at Arcata High on Saturday.

The victory keeps Arcata atop the H-DNL standings while the loss was the first for Del Norte in league play.

Both goals came in the opening half of the game.

“Arcata played a solid game,” Del Norte head coach David Sanyaolu said. “They were more fluid than us with the ball, especially in the first half.”

Daniel Hernandez and Izaiah Grosveld each scored for Arcata, while Tanner Kees posted the clean sheet in goal.

Junior Julian Gillespie had an assist.

The visitors, who dropped to 2-1-1 in league play, grew into the game after the break but were unable to find the back of the net.

“We played a little better in the second half, but didn’t create much,” Sanyaolu added.

The win is a big boost for the Tigers, who are looking to regain the league title they clinched two years ago.

The reigning H-DNL champion Warriors, however, will get another shot at Arcata when the two schools face off in a second league match in Crescent City on Oct. 22.

“My boys are looking forward to the reverse fixture,” Sanyaolu said. “We can play better.”

The loss was just the second of the season for the Del Norte boys.

Arcata improved to 11-1-1 overall, while the Warriors are now 9-2-1.
