The Hoopa Warriors broke open a tight game with a big second-half performance at South Fork on Friday night, on their way to their first win of the season.

The Warriors scored 24 points after the interval in a 30-0 win over the Cubs and gave first-year varsity head coach Curtis Kane his first win with the team.

The victory was a nice response from the players after they lost a heartbreaker at home against Etna the previous weekend.

With the win, the Warriors improved to 1-2

There were several standouts for the Hoopa, including receiver Brandon Romero, who is enjoying an outstanding start to the new season.

The Hoopa senior provided the highlight of the game when he took a reverse and ran 80 yards to the end zone.

Junior Carlos Anzora led the passers and completed 8 of 17 passes for 115 yards.

Lyle McKinnon also had a good night passing and completed 2 of 4 attempts for 82 yards and two TDs.

Six Hoopa players combined for nine receptions, including Anzora and McKinnon.

Anzora had a 59-yard TD catch, while McKinnon pulled in two receptions for 40 yards and a TD.

Junior Daniel Peralta also had a 23-yard TD catch.

Four different Hoopa players combined for the 183 yards on the ground, including Donald Hostler, who finished with 76 yards on 13 carries.

Anzora also scored a rushing TD.

The Warriors also had some big performances on the defensive side of the ball.

Senior Nathan Edwards led the team with seven solo tackles, while Uriah Chang, Chergeesh Mace and Merwin Clark each finished with five.

Kehniwh Offield and Peralta each added four tackles.

With the loss, the Cubs dropped to 0-2 on the season.

South Fork will try to bounce back at Hayfork next weekend.

The Warriors will try to make it two straight wins when they play at Trinity next weekend in their final pre-league game.

Hoopa will have a bye the following week before opening the Little 4 at Ferndale on the afternoon of Oct. 5.
