Both Cal Poly Humboldt soccer teams were in a action on Thursday, with mixed fortunes.

The Humboldt women got their first win of the new season and improved to 1-2 with a 2-0 victory at Dominican.

The Jacks won with a strong defensive performance and and timely goals by Megan Janikowski and Mari Ige.

Humboldt’s defense held firm throughout the match, with goalkeeper Carson Thomson-Terrel making three crucial saves to preserve the clean sheet.

It was a nice response from the team after dropping its opening two games of the season last week.

“Last weekend was hard for the team, but today we showed a fight that was really impressive,” head coach Grant Landy said after the win. “We have lots to work on, but our team mentality was so much better. We will try and keep this momentum going for Saturday.”

Next up, the Jacks play at Academy of Art on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Cal Poly Humboldt Men’s team, meanwhile, also was in action on Thursday and fell 3-1 at Menlo.

The Lumberjacks, who dropped to 0-2-1, took the lead in the 12th minute when Marcus Abdel-Malek netted his first goal of the season off a well-placed assist from Cooper Stephens.

However, Menlo (2-0-0) responded in the 37th minute with an equalizer from Saul Gutierrez, sending the teams into halftime tied at 1-1.

The Oaks took control in the second half with two more goals.

Humboldt managed six shots in the game, three of which were on target, but Menlo’s defense held firm.

Menlo outshot Humboldt 13-6, with five of their shots on goal.

The Lumberjacks will look to rebound on Saturday when they play Fresno Pacific (0-1-1) in Atherton at 1 p.m.
