New College of the Redwoods softball head coach Micaela Harris has announced the addition of eight new players for next year’s team, including five local standouts.
South Fork’s Cloe McConnell, St. Bernard’s Kiara McGinnis, Arcata’s Aria Soberanis and Corrina Cunningham and Fortuna’s Ashley Jenks will play the Corsairs for 2025, along with Vonyea Pina (Arizona Western College), Jordyn Hattery (Spanish Springs) and Neveah Da Veiga (Inderkum).
The eight newcomers will join four key returning players, including Hoopa’s Beth Masten and sisters Jewely and Diamond Bibancos-Knight, as well as Eureka’s Maeghan Hampton.
McConnell will see some time in the pitcher’s circle as well as filling in in a variety of positions elsewhere after a standout career in three different sports with the Cubs.
“We are so excited about having Cloe join the program,” Harris said. “She’s going to make an immediate impact in the circle and we can’t wait to see her grow as a pitcher.”
McConnell committed to the Corsairs early in the summer.
McGinnis, who played a pivotal role in leading St. Bernard’s to a conference championship this past spring, also committed to CR earlier in the year and is also expected to make an immediate impact in the infield.
“Her strength and skill at first base bring stability to our infield,” the head coach said. “Kiara’s work ethic and commitment to the game will make a big difference for us, and we can’t wait to see her contribute on and off the field.”
Arcata graduate Soberanis, meanwhile, will play third base and in the outfield after honing her skills with the Tigers.
“Her speed in the outfield and on the bases is a game-changer,” Harris said. “We’re looking forward to seeing her make big plays and push us to the next level.”
Jenks was a valuable team leader on a young Fortuna Huskies team as a high school senior this past spring and Harris expects her to also bring some versatility to the CR lineup.

“While we see her primarily making an impact at first base, her versatility in the outfield gives us added depth and flexibility,” the coach said. “Ashley’s a hard worker and we’re looking forward to seeing her excel in multiple roles this season.”
Cunningham, meanwhile, is coming back to the area after spending some time playing for Highline College in Seattle.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Corrina back home form Seattle to join the Redwoods family,” Harris said of the 2022 Arcata High graduate. “Her experience and skills in the infield are exactly what we need to bolster our defense.
“Corrina’s return is a big boost for us, and we’re excited to see her bring her talent and leadership back to familiar ground.”
All three of the out-of-area recruits also are expected to play an immediate role with the team.
Pina is transferring from Arizona Western College and will bring some much-needed experience to the infield and at the plate.

Kiara McGinnis
“We’re thrilled to have Vonyea on board with Redwoods this season and to add an experienced member to our squad,” the new head coach said. “Her presence in the infield will make an immediate impact, with her quick hands and fielding instincts elevating our defense.
“On top of that, she’s a reliable contact hitter who will be a key piece of our lineup.”
Hattery will also play infield for the Corsairs.
“Her skills in the infield and ability to make smart, quick decisions on the field will be a huge asset to our defense,” Harris said. “Jordyn’s work ethic, natural leadership and passion for the game are exactly what we look for in a player.”
The speedy Da Veiga will give the new team a reliable glove in center field and she is a left-handed hitter.
“Her speed in center field is a game changer, and as a lefty slapper she brings a unique offensive edge to our lineup,” the coach added.
