COLLEGE SOCCER — Prentiss leads CR to season-opening win

Submitted photo – The College of the Redwoods women’s soccer team got the new season off to a winning start at Mendocino on Friday.

Former Arcata Tiger Alia Prentiss got the new women’s college soccer season off to an impressive start on Friday.

The College of the Redwoods standout scored five goals and assisted on a sixth as the Corsairs traveled to Ukiah to take on Mendocino College and won 6-2.

Miriam Munoz-Guerrero also scored in the win and added an assist, as the Corsairs improved to 1-0 and Mendocino dropped to 0-3.

Malia Bolden also had an assist in the victory.

Next up, the Corsairs will host Mendocino in a rematch in their home opener on Tuesday.

Kick off is set for 2 p.m.

The Cal Poly Humboldt women’s team also was in action this weekend, dropping a pair of games at College Creek Field in Arcata.

After an impressive preseason that saw them go unbeaten in three exhibition games, the Lumberjacks officially kicked off the new season on Thursday with a 3-1 loss to Azusa Pacific and they followed that with a 4-0 loss to Seattle Pacific on Saturday.

Frida Duran Arellano scored the only goal of the weekend for CPH.

Next up, the Jacks will play at Dominican on Thursday at 1 p.m.
