VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS — No shortage of big plays on opening weekend

By Ray Hamill — If week two of the local high school football season is as exciting as week one, then fans here on the North Coast are in for a treat.

Last weekend, we witnessed several big plays in the five games played here in Humboldt County.

Perhaps most impressive of all of them was Tanner Pidgeon’s 95-yard touchdown run for Ferndale against Fort Bragg, which was one of five TDs he accounted for in a 39-12 win.

But it was far from the only play that had fans jumping out of their seats.

Arcata quarterback Luke Lemke threw for three TDs in a 22-0 win over Eureka, including an 81-yard bomb to senior receiver Dayquan Dunn.

Hoopa’s Allen Kane and Brandon Romero also combined on a 91-yard TD passing play in the Warriors’ 45-6 loss to St. Bernard’s, while SB sophomore receiver Garrett Shanahan pulled in a spectacular one-handed TD catch in the same game.

Check out highlights from four of the five games played here on the North Coast above as football returned with a bang.

The season continues this weekend, with eight of the nine local varsity teams in action, including seven of them on Friday night.

The game of the weekend will take at McKinleyville High School, where the Arcata Tigers and Fortuna Huskies will face off.

Both schools are coming off big wins a week ago and the winner of this game will likely top the Humboldt Sports Power Rankings next week.

Also in action on Friday night, the Hoopa Warriors will try to bounce back when they host Etna, as will the Eureka Loggers when they travel to play Shasta.

Del Norte will also try to bounce back from a season-opening loss at Fortuna when Ashland travels to Crescent City for the Warriors’ home opener.

Pidgeon and the Wildcats will also be in action on Friday night as they try to go to 2-0 with a tough matchup at Fall River.

And rounding out a busy Friday night of local action, the South Fork Cubs will kick off their season at Fort Bragg.

There will be one local game on Saturday afternoon, as the Crusaders welcome Willits to Eureka in their home opener.

That kick off is set for 2 p.m.
