The Humboldt Eagles got back to winning ways with a 3-1 win over the Southern Humboldt 76ers in American Legion baseball action at Fortuna on Thursday night.

Ryder Mitchell had a big game for the Eagles and was instrumental in the win, both on the mound and at the plate.

Mitchell got the victory in a hard-fought pitchers’ duel against Southern Humboldt’s Drew Franklin.

The Eagles pitcher threw six strong innings, giving up just one run on three hits and two walks and striking out eight.

He also was 1-for-3 at the plate with a double and scored one of his team’s three runs.

Cooper Ohlsen threw one hitless inning in relief for the save.

Ohlsen also impressed at the plate and was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Able Estes added a double and Royce Olson was 1-for-3.

The performance was a nice response from the team after a 16-2 loss to the Northern Humboldt Giants on Tuesday evening.

“Happy to see how the team responded after a couple of tough losses,” head coach Tommy Gale said. “We came out strong and grinded out a win in a hard-fought pitchers’ duel.

“Tip of the hat to Drew Franklin, who threw a great game for the 76ers.”

Next up, the Eagles will play a doubleheader at Petaluma on Saturday, with game one set for 10 a.m.
