Junior Myra Hayes and sophomore Isabel Sanchez each played a key role in Fortuna’s 8-1 win over St. Bernard’s in Thursday night’s Charles Lakin softball tournament semifinal.

Hayes had the hot bat for the night and finished 4-for-4 with an RBI, as the Huskies jumped out to an early five-run lead and made it stick.

Sanchez, who has quickly established herself as one of the most dominating pitchers in the H-DNL this season, continued to keep opposing players off balance on her way to the victory in the circle.

The standout sophomore have up just three hits and three walks and struck out 14.

In two tournament games this week, Sanchez has struck out 34 batters.

On Tuesday she threw a no-hitter in a shutout victory over Ferndale.

Several other Huskies also impressed at the plate in Thursday’s semifinal.

Sanchez, Olivia Hayes, Kadence Mace, Ashley Jenks and Olivia Scilacci all had two hits in the win, including a double by Scilacci.

Mariah Bravo also had a base hit.

Olivia Hayes, Mace, Jenks and Evelyn Little all had RBIs.

The win sets up a championship showdown against Big 5 champs Del Norte in Friday evening’s Lakin tournament final.

The Del Norte girls defeated McKinleyville 8-3 in Thursday’s other semifinal.

Friday’s final, which will be played at the Arcata Sports Complex, is set for 5 p.m.
