Isabel Sanchez and the Fortuna Huskies silenced the Ferndale bats on Tuesday night, as they advanced to the semifinals of the Charles Lakin tournament.

The standout sophomore pitched a no-hitter and helped her team to a 7-0 win in the opening round of tournament play at the Arcata Sports Complex.

The victory sets up a showdown against Little 4 champion St. Bernard’s on Thursday night.

Sanchez struck out 20 and walked just three on the way to the Huskies’ first shutout of the season.

But she wasn’t the only young pitcher to impress.

Ferndale freshman Olivia Gossi, who has continued to get better week after week, held a dangerous Big 5 lineup to just five hits.

“I felt Olivia pitched her best game of the year against a tough Fortuna team,” Ferndale head coach Jeremy Griffith said.

Gossi also got some help from her defense, as the Huskies stranded six baserunners.

Fortuna freshman Olivia Scilacci provided one of the offensive highlights of the night with a big a double into the right center gap to score Mariah Bravo, who had walked.

With the win, the Fortuna girls improved to 15-6.

Thursday’s semifinal showdown is set for 7 p.m.

The McKinleyville Panthers and Del Norte Warriors will meet in the other tournament semifinal on Thursday, which gets under way at 5 p.m.

Friday’s championship will also take place at the Arcata Sports Complex at 5 p.m.
