Eureka’s Talon Vigil took a big step toward a league title in H-DNL boys golf on Monday, while the Loggers closed in on the team championship.

Vigil posted the low score for the fourth time in five rounds of league play to break a tie with St. Bernard’s Jack Kramer at the top of the season standings and lead the Eureka boys to a second-place team finish.

Competing at Baywood Golf and Country Club, Vigil shot a 77 to lead the field by two strokes and move four strokes clear in the season standings with just one round of league remaining.

The Eureka senior has been the most consistent golfer this season, with two rounds of 76, two of 77 and a season-best round of 70 at Eureka recently.

Kramer, who had the fifth best round of the day on Monday with an 82, remains second in the league standings and still in contention for the league title just four strokes back.

Arcata’s Joaquin Ponce shot a 79 for the second-best round of the day, followed by McKinleyville’s Jake Gardner with an 80 and Arcata’s Lucas Wemberley with an 81.

Ponce and Wemberly led the Tigers to their first team win of the season after placing second to Eureka in each of the first four rounds.

The Arcata boys shot a combined 335, which was two strokes better than Eureka.

However, the Loggers remain in pole position to win the season championship and hold a 29-stroke lead over the Tigers heading into the season finale, which will also take place at Baywood next Monday.

Eureka’s Julian Goodman and Fortuna’s Dawson McWhorter tied for the sixth best round on Monday with 83s.

Five different Arcata boys shot a 91 or better.

In addition to Ponce and Wemberly’s big performances, Mason Alway shot an 86, while Ryzen Miller shot an 89 and Zayne Morris-Slattery shot a 91.
