Arcata and Eureka girls teams lead the way at second league meet

By Ray Hamill — There was little to separate the Arcata and Eureka girls at Wednesday’s second H-DNL track and field meet of the spring at McKinleyville High School, with the Tigers edging their rivals by 10 team points.

Each school won seven of the 17 events, with three multiple winners from both, as the Tigers scored 138 points and the Loggers scored 128.

Fortuna was a distant third on the day with 83 points, followed by Del Norte (50) and McKinleyville (43).

Eureka junior Isabella Claussen enjoyed an impressive day in the throws, taking first in both the shot put and discus and posting PRs in each event.

Through the opening two meets of league competition, Claussen has won three of the four throwing events.

On Wednesday she won the shot put with a throw of 33’ 11.5” and placed first in the discus with a throw of 100’ 4”.

McKinleyville’s Syriah George was second in both events, with Ferndale’s Cate Carrizales third in the discus and Del Norte’s Hollyn Wakefield third in the shot.

Claussen’s teammate’s Emily Pesch and Elizabeth Rominger were both also double winners on the day, as were Arcata’s Bella DeCarli, Soquel MacDonald and Nicole Nozawa.

Pesch won the 100 meters in a time of 13.4 seconds, followed by Rominger in second and St. Bernard’s Laila Florvilus in third, while Rominger was first across the line in the 200m in a time of 27.49 seconds, which was also a PR, followed by Fortuna’s Allie Cox in second and DeCarli in third.

Pesch and Rominger also teamed up with Evelyn Ladika and Grecia Ortiz to win the 4x100m relay for Eureka.

DeCarli, who is enjoying an outstanding freshman year in sports, placed first in the 400m with a PR of 1 minute, 2.46 seconds, followed by Fortuna’s Madison Ruiz in second and Arcata’s Ada Kinziger in third.

DeCarli also helped the Tigers win the 4x400m relay, along with Zalayshia Velazquez, Nozawa and Kinziger, while MacDonald, Sonya Chisholm, Zoe Cappuccio and Sydney Ventuleth won the 4x800m relay for the Tigers.

The impressive MacDonald also was first across the line in the 1600m in a time of 5:58.73, followed by Fortuna’s Brida Lester in second and Eureka’s Summer Morales in third, while Nozawa placed first in the 300m hurdles in a time of 50.75 seconds, followed by Arcata’s Quincy Collins in second and Fortuna’s Brylee Barsanti in third.

The 100m hurdles was won by Florvilus, who was also named Humboldt Sports Girls Basketball Player of the Year this week.

The impressive junior won the race in a time of 15.85 seconds, with Barsanti second and Nozawa in third.

Eureka’s Miriam Mende, meanwhile, placed first in the 800m in a time of 2:38.28, followed by teammate Claire Gast in second and the busy MacDonald in third, while Eureka’s Sequoia Ashby took first in the 3200m in a time of 13:59.11, with McKinleyville’s Saffron Paxton in second.

Del Norte’s Lily Sherman also had success and placed first in the triple jump with a jump of 33’ 6.5”, while Fortuna’s Bella Mitten won the long jump with a PR of 15’ 11.75”.

Mitten also was second in the triple jump, followed by Arcata’s Collins in third, while Arcata’s Anna McLaughlin was second in the long jump, followed by Eureka’s Victoria Ricca in third.

Collins rounded out an impressive day of competition by placing first in the high jump with a jump of 5’ 2”, while her teammate Mayleah Jackson wo the pole vault with a mark of 8’.

Del Norte’s Addyson Crabtree was second in the pole vault, while Del Norte’s Jeana Erler was second in the high jump, with Eureka’s Sophie Grimmet third.

The next league meet will take place in two weeks at Del Norte High School.
