The South Fork Cubs won their second straight game at the Maxwell tournament on Saturday, defeating Live Oak 6-4 in the consolation game.
The Del Norte Norte Warriors also closed out the Pleasant Valley tournament with a victory on Saturday, getting the better of University 4-3 for their first win of the season.
At Maxwell, senior Justin Freitas continued his impressive start to the new season with a strong performance on the mound.
Freitas, who hit a home run in a victory over Esparto on Friday, carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and ended up giving up just two hits in 6.2 innings work.
“I’m really pleased with his performance today, especially with little work in the bullpen,” head coach Chris Contreras said of the senior, who struck out seven.
Another senior, Broc Contreras, led the way at the plate and finished 3-for-4 with a run and a stolen base, while senior transfer Chris Pedaris had an immediate impact at the plate and on the mound.
The versatile Pedaris, who did not play his junior year, struck out the last batter for the save and also was 1-for-3 with a double.
“It seems like he is finding his groove with this team,” the head coach said. “I’m stoked to have a player that can play multiple positions and he is that guy.”
Lucas Genolio, Wesley Way, Travis “T-Bone” Way and Shevy Bero-Van Meter each also had a base hit in the win, as the Cubs improved to 2-1.
All in all it was a good opening weekend for the South Fork players.
“I’m really appreciative of this tournament,” Chris Contreras said. “Great to play other small schools in the Northern Section.
“Maxwell High School and AD Kyle Cabral really put on a well-organized and competitive tournament.”
Next up, the Cubs will play a doubleheader against San Domenico in Miranda on Saturday.
The Del Norte Warriors, meanwhile, got their first win at the Pleasant Valley tournament.
Preston Daniels, who has been a definite bright spot for the team early in the season, continued to impress and got the victory on the mound.
The junior standout struck out 12 and gave up just one unearned run.
Fellow junior Anthony Cardenas also impressed at the plate and finished 2-for-3, as the Warriors closed out tournament action 1-2-1 with their best game at the three-day event.
However, like with just every team at this stage of the season, there is still plenty of room for improvement.
“We played a complete team game with only a few errors,” head coach Jeff Cook said. “Definitely need more outside practice.”
Colin Tromble got the save in relief of Daniels.
Del Norte’s scheduled game against Grants Pass was rained out on Tuesday.
Next up, the Warriors will play at the Yreka tournament this weekend, beginning on Friday.
