Locals impress for Cal Poly Humboldt triathlon team

Cal Poly Humboldt Athletics – The Humboldt women’s triathlon team.

The Cal Poly Humboldt women’s triathlon team competed in its first race of the season on Sunday, with two local athletes on hand.

The Jacks traveled to Redwood City to race in the Stanford Treeathlon.

The Humboldt women competed against teams from UC Santa Barbara, UCLA, Stanford, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Irvine in a race that included a 600 meter open-water swim, a 20km bike race and a 5K run.

Senior Farrah Tyler led the team with a fourth-place finish overall in a time of 1 hour, 12 minutes. 3 seconds.

Two local athletes also competed for the team.

Senior Elizabeth Odell of Academy of the Redwoods placed 13th overall in a time of 1:18:28, while Eureka High graduate Camille Shaver, a sophomore, finished 17th in a time of 1:27:00.

Freshman Eve Wendley also impressed for the team and finished 10th with a time of 1:16:46.

Sierra Erlandson and Alexa Blakey each also competed for the Jacks and placed 15th (1:23:26) and 16th (1:24:09), respectively.

Tyler led the team in the 600m swim (13:14) and 5k run (21:32) portions of the race, while Odell paved the way on the 20km bike with a time of 35:25.

The Jacks will close out their spring season on April 20 at the Beaver Freezer Triathlon in Corvalis, Oregon.
