H-DNL teams prepare for St. Bernard’s tournament at Bear River

By Ray Hamill — With a break in the rainy weather forecast for later in the week and an all-weather field available, St. Bernard’s will host a six-team baseball tournament on Thursday and Friday.

The tournament will take place at the Bear River field, with nine games scheduled for the two days.

The six-team tournament will feature five H-DNL schools in two pools, with Arcata, Ferndale, Fortuna, Hoopa and Trinity joining the host team.

Each team will play three games, including two in pool play.

The action gets under way at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, when the Crusaders play Fortuna in a matchup of the defending Little 4 and Big 5 champions.

Also on opening day, Arcata plays Ferndale (10:45 a.m.), Hoopa plays Arcata (1 p.m.) and St. Bernard’s plays Trinity (3:45 p.m.)

The action continues on Friday with five more games.

At 9 a.m., Trinity plays Fortuna, followed by Hoopa and Ferndale at 11:15 a.m.

The two third-place teams in pool play with face off at 1:30 p.m., followed by the two second-place teams at 3:45 p.m. and the championship game at 6 p.m.

The tournament was originally scheduled to be played over three days, but had to be cut short because of the weekend weather forecast.

SOFTBALL 

In local softball news, a scheduled game between St. Bernard’s and McKinleyville was postponed on Tuesday because of the rain and will now take place on March 20 instead, at 4 p.m.

The Crusaders, however, are still scheduled to play a doubleheader against Etna at the Bear River field on Thursday after the day’s baseball action.

The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
