By Ray Hamill — A number of local players have joined the elite 1,000-points club recently, including three Little 4 seniors who are enjoying outstanding seasons.

And that makes them our athletes of the week, an award sponsored as always by College of the Redwoods Athletics.

Following in the recent footsteps of South Fork’s Tommy Rotbergs, St. Bernard’s teammates Seth Dyer and Aaiden Burris both scored their 1,000th career points recently as well, with Burris achieving the milestone in a 67-43 win at Ferndale on Friday night.

All three players have been leading the way on their teams all season long and the achievement is testament to the work the talented trio have put in over the past few years as they continue to hone their skills on the basketball court.

“It’s a credit to their commitment to this sport and effort they have put in, especially in the offseason to improve their skills,” St. Bernard’s coach Pat Shanahan said of Burris and Dyer after Friday’s big win, which was the Crusaders’ 14th straight.

All three senior standouts will continue their seasons — and no doubt add to their career points tally — when they play in next week’s Dick Niclai tournament, before they head into the North Coast Section playoffs.

Our team of the week, meanwhile, goes to an up and coming program that enjoyed a breakthrough week.

On Tuesday night, the Arcata Tigers clinched a pair of H-DNL dual meet championships on the wrestling mats with victories over Fortuna.

The league title is the first for the boys since 2006 and the first-ever for the girls team.

The three standouts have been leading their respective teams for the past few years, something that is reflected in their recent milestone achievements.

And all three closed out league play with big performances on Friday night.

Dyer finished with 19 points and nine rebounds at Ferndale, while Burris added 15 points and six boards.

Dyer now has 1,146 career points.

Rotbergs was even more impressive in South Fork’s 76-66 win over Hoopa and scored a game-high 36 points, including 18 in the first quarter.

The Cubs star finished with six 3-pointers.
